Across a Crowded Room @NYPL Performing Arts

Today I am trying something totally new.  The NYPL is an amazing place with branches spread out across the city and something always happening.  So when I saw a listing for 20 minute musicals I couldn’t resist.. will update you later!

UPDATE;  Well worth the time and since it was free absolutely a bargain.  In the Basement of the Performing Arts Library in the Bruno Walter Auditorium we found ourselves seated with a few hundred others listening to a staff member share tales of things found in the archives.  The subject of the day was ‘collaboration’ and so we saw notes from famous collaborators in musical theatre.

Two of the four bits we saw were pretty bad, one was good and one stood out.  The standout was “Time Travel Makes Complete Sense”   You can view it on youtube here.  And yes, we were in the room as this was filmed.  I think this is the one and only performance.

Remember that these were created in a matter of works by groups of strangers thrown together because the y signed up to have an experience.   I dont mean to imply that they were completely inexperienced. The listing on the website describes it this way…  The Library for the Performing Arts presents culminating performances of the “Across a Crowded Room” musical theater writing workshop. After participating in a summer of masterclasses presented by the Library, teams of emerging theater makers will present live performances of their newly written, twenty-minute musicals
