DC day 2 – Chesapeake Bay

A typical day, 5 hours in the car and the ultimate goal spot foiled. I cannot say that google didn’t warn us that Annamarie sculpture garden in Solomon was closed, but I chose to believe the gardens own web site – big mistake. Not that it wasn’t a perfectly lovely day and we have in our possession now a load of things to do, or rather I should say a few things to do and a load of places to stop and eat.

Our first stop was lunch in Herrington Harbour at Ketch 22. A typical seaside spot that gets by with mediocre food and the same setup as every other mid level seafood spot. Excellent pretzel rolls came with the crab dip, nice potatoes with a piece of salmon and Brads eggs.

On our way we took the scenic route and passed by horse farms and grand houses and old farms. We drove down some pretty roads, saw some leaves changing and generally just enjoyed as we do.

Of course, lunch and the drive are never really the point, the bakist was the point. Just a short drive from lunch we found ourselves in a waterside town that felt and looked local. There were certainly signs that it fills up int he summer but today, the streets were quiet.

the pretty little town of North Beach, Maryland.

Things I remember – look for the gazebo. Outside of town park on the left behind the white buildings to walk.

We picked up a few things and they were all excellent. Highly recommend the gooey cookie but the Caramel sea salt chocolate chip was also top notch. And who wouldn’t love a skull cake.

We did not stop at Vaughan Cheese but we will next time. They advertise that they specialize in American cheeses!

At Mrs. Moo’s Corner we felt like we had wandered into a 7 year olds dream shop. A small room filled with all sorts of sweets, nothing appealing, but we did walk out with s’mores popcorn. Tell me you could have passed that up.

All of this to take us finally to Annemaries sculpture Garden.. buy NOOOOOOO, the gates were locked…

With an hour to go before it was tiem to head back we drove aimlessly, looking at the water on our GPS that was just a block away. Then a small sign appeared pointing towards the lookout. We followed, we parked, we saw. It was perfect.

Headed back to DC we couldn’t resist the pull of the sign for Calvert Cliffs State Park where it turns out, according to the lovely gate attendant, there have been avalanches so we couldn’t walk the cliffs but should come back in a week, when the leaves have changed and we take the red path to the beach and look up at the cliffs. If we are worried about avalanches I would think standing under the cliff is not a bright spot to find oneself, but then I am not a park ranger.

Last stop was Chesapeakes Bounty, a local farm with an abundance of pumpkins, refrigerated meats, all kinds of crabs and seafood and local honey. I bought some sunflower honey and left the CBD honey behind.

All sorts of fun things on the shelves.

We finished the day at Queen’s English, a take on Chinese that was a bit too experimental for me. Give me some LoMein and I am happy, silken tofu, spicy jellyfish, tripe… these are not my thing. Nothing was bad, I am sure it was all good. I am just not in possession of a sophisticated enough palette to appreciate it. The best part was the tiny little hand towels brought out with the duck wings

So, that was the day. the news is still confounding. Joe Manchin is still doing his thing holding up the Build Back Better Plan and I am still amazed that my fellow Americans live in fear of a boogeyman. That people believe all this nonsense about a stolen election dn critical race theory and generally just aren’t behaving very christian.

Recommended for our next visit. A walk on the boardwalk, the pier, Anglers and Charles Street Brasserie.

It is hard to believe that when we saw this we were 200 yards from Chesapeake Bay. It felt like we were in rolling hills in the middle of nowhere.
